- 1580: The Book of Concord, a collection of doctrinal standards of the Lutheran Church, was first published.
- 1630: Gov. John Winthrop of Massachusetts introduced the fork to America.
- 1667: Dr. Jean-Baptiste Denys, a French doctor, performed the first blood transfusion.
- 1788: Virginia ratified the Constitution.
- 1798: The Alien Act was passed, giving the president authority to deport dangerous aliens.
- 1867: The first barbed wire was patented by Lucien B. Smith of Ohio.
- 1868: President Andrew Johnson passed a law that government workers would work an eight-hour day.
- 1876: At the Battle of the Little Big Horn, Sioux Indians led by Chief Crazy Horse routed the U.S. 7th Cavalry led by General Custer. Custer died with his company of 264 men.
- 1903: George Orwell (born Eric Blair), writer of "Animal Farm" and "1984"" was born.
- 1910: The Mann Act was passed, making it illegal to transport women into the U.S. or across state lines for immoral purposes.
- 1929: President Hoover authorized Boulder (Hoover) Dam.
- 1942: Maj. Gen. Dwight Eisenhower was appointed commander of U.S. forces in Europe.
- 1947: The tennis shoe was introduced.
- 1950: North Korea invaded South Korea, heralding the beginning of the Korean War.
- 1961: Iraq said Kuwait was part of Iraq.
- 1990: The Supreme Court ruled in the first "right-to-die" decision, that family members cannot end the lives of comatose relatives unless those relatives had previously made their wishes known.
- 1991: Croatia and Slovenia declare their independence from Yugoslavia.
- 1993: Kim Campbell is chosen as leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada and becomes the first female Prime Minister of Canada.
- 1996: The Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia kills 19 U.S. servicemen.
- 1997: An unmanned Progress spacecraft collides with the Russian space station, Mir.
- 1997: The Soufrière Hills volcano in Montserrat erupts resulting in the deaths of 19 people.
- 1998: In Clinton v. City of New York, the United States Supreme Court decides that the Line Item Veto Act of 1996 is unconstitutional.
- 2006: Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier, is kidnapped by Palestinian terrorists in a cross-border raid from the Gaza Strip.
- 2007: 2007 United Kingdom floods, parts of Lincolnshire and Yorkshire flood including Louth, Horncastle and worst affected, Hull.
