- 1781: The Articles of Confederation were adopted by the Continental Congress.
- 1790: The first U.S. census was authorized.
- 1845: President Tyler signed a congressional resolution to annex the Republic of Texas.
- 1872: Legislation was passed by Congress creating the first federal park land in the U.S. The tract in the Wyoming Territory was later named Yellowstone National Park.
- 1912: Albert Berry made the first parachute jump from an airplane at Jefferson Barracks, Mo.
- 1932: The 20-month old infant son of aviator Charles and Anne Lindbergh was kidnapped from the family's home near Hopewell, N.J.
- 1936: The Hoover Dam is completed.
- 1939: Japanese Imperial Army ammunition dump exploded at Hirakata, Osaka, Japan, killing 94.
- 1939: Trans-Canada Air Lines (forerunner of Air Canada) begins transcontinental operations (between Vancouver and Montreal).
- 1941: World War II: Bulgaria signs the Tripartite Pact, allying itself with the Axis powers.
- 1941: W47NV (now known as WSM-FM) begins operations in Nashville, Tennessee becoming the first FM radio station in the U.S..
- 1943: World War II: Battle of Bismarck Sea begins.
- 1946: The Bank of England is nationalised.
- 1947: The International Monetary Fund begins financial operations.
- 1950: Cold War: Klaus Fuchs is convicted of spying for the Soviet Union by disclosing top secret atomic bomb data.
- 1953: Joseph Stalin suffers a stroke and collapses. He dies four days later.
- 1961: The Peace Corps was established.
- 1983: Tamara McKinney became the first American woman skier to win the World Cup overall championship.
- 1988: Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers became the NHL's all-time assist leader with a game-winning goal, breaking the longtime 26-year mark of Gordie Howe.
- 1993: Authorities near Waco, Texas continued negotiating with Branch Davidians holed up in their compound, one day after a gun battle between the Davidians and federal agents that left 10 people dead.
