Aim: How did the Jamestown colony survive?

  1. Problems in the Jamestown colony - 1607

    1. London Company settlers searched for gold, silver, and river passages to the Far East.
    2. These settlers failed to plant crops and build shelters.

  2. A new leader takes charge of Jamestown

    1. John Smith, an English soldier, became leader and created strict rules.
    2. Smith also set-up work parties, who would build shelters, plant crops, hunt and search for fresh water.
    3. Smith also made friends with the Native Americans.

  3. The Cash Crop - Tobacco

    1. Tobacco became a successful and profitable crop for Jamestown.
    2. However, tobacco needs a lot of people to care for the crop.
    3. Jamestown introduced indentured servants and slaves to work the crops.
