Aim: How did the threat of communism affect Americans at home?
Senator McCarthy and the "Reds"
By the 1950's, the United States government had convinced the American people that communism was a serious threat to the nation.
A little known Senator, named
Joseph McCarthy
decided to attract attention by declaring he knew of communists in the United States.
Panic spread throughout the United States, and American people were accused of being communists.
Friends of accused communists were also accused of being communists, in what became known as
Guilt by Association
.
The Rosenbergs
Juilus and Ethel Rosenberg were accused of giving atomic secrets to the Soviet Union.
After a long, public trial, the Rosenbergs were found guilty of
treason
and executed.
