Aim: Why was the United Nations created and how did the United States' position in the world change?
The United Nations
- The United Nations consists of two main groups or bodies (and several other smaller organizations), where the nations of the world can discuss and settle their differences.
- The General Assembly - all nations in the United Nations vote on international issues and problems.
- The Security Council consists of the 5 permanent members of France, Britain, China, the United States and the Soviet Union; along with 10 elected member nations.
- The United Nations can impose economic sanctions on nations that are causing trouble in the world.
- The United Nations can vote on sending United Nations peacekeeping forces to "hot spots" in the world.
The United States' position after World War Two
- The United States was the world's first and only nuclear power and was called a superpower after World War Two.
- After World War Two, the United States had to decide on its position in the world -- an isolationists position or a globalists position.
- The United States deicided on a globalist position and adopted a policy of containment.
- This containment policy was aimed directly at the Soviet Union and to stop the spread of communism throughout the world.
