Aim: How did the Allies Forces defeat Japan?
December 1941 - June 1942
- During the beginning of the war against Britain and the United States, Japan captured several territories throughout Asia and the Pacific.
The Allies defeat Japan
- Fighting in the Pacific, the United States adopted two new strategies of fighting.
- The United States relied on aircraft carriers to fight the Japanese.
- Also, in order to attack Japan directly, the United States had to invade islands in the Pacific to get closer and closer to Japan. This strategy was called island-hopping.
- The Battle of Midway became the turning point in the war in the Pacific.
- As a result of the Battle of Midway and United States' island-hopping, the Japanese were forced to retreat.
- However, the Japanese refused to surrender and on August 6, 1945 an atomic bomb was dropped on Hirshima, Japan.
- On August 9, 1945 a second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan.
- On August 14, 1945, the Japanese surrendered and the day became known as V-J Day.
