Aim: How did the United States Government
respond to the Great Depression?
The Election of 1932
- President Herbert Hoover lost the 1932 election to Franklin D. Roosevelt.
- President Roosevelt addressed the American people on the radio with a series speeches which became known as his "fire-side chats".
- During one of his speeches, Roosevelt stated, "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself."
Roosevelt's New Deal Plan
- The New Deal Plan was a series of government plans and programs to create jobs and get Amercians working again.
- The United States government created public works programs - the PWA (1933) and then the WPA (1935).
- Under these programs, people built roads, buildings, schools, hospitals, and post offices.
- To help restore Americans' faith in the banking system the government created the FDIC.
- The FDIC (1933) promised American people, if a bank closed the United States government would pay depositors up to $100,000.
- Another New Deal program was the Tennessee Valley Authority - 1933.
- The TVA program built dams to control flood waters and produce electricity for the South and Midwest United States.
