Germany loses territory
- Under the Treaty of Versailles, Germany would lose land to contain it from its neighbors.
- Germany lost land on its eastern border to create the nation of Poland.
- The creation of Poland separated Germany from Eastern Prussia.
- Germany lost the Alsace-Lorraine region to France.
- Germany was also ordered not to place soldiers and military equipment in the Rhineland, which is on the French border.
Germany ordered to pay
- Germany was ordered to demilitarize. All warships and submarines were turned over to the British and French governments.
- Germany was also ordered to pay huge war reparations to the Allies (Britain, France and Italy).
- Germany was ordered to pay billions of dollars for damages during the war.
The League of Nations
- The Allies agreed to have a world organization.
- However, the United States Senate rejected the Treaty of Versailles, stating the Allies were treating Germany too harsh.
- The United States did not join the League of Nations.
