Lesson Number: 002
Aim: How did conflict between North and South lead to war?
The Slavery Controversy
- Not many people objected when territory east of the Mississippi became a free or slave state.
- However, Congress had not made laws dealing with slavery in the territories west of the Mississippi River.
- In 1819, Missouri applied to join the Union. Many northern states opposed the spread of slavery.
Regional Pride versus National Patriotism
- In the North there was a greater sense of national pride than amongst Southern.
- The South believed, for the most part, in self-governing, as opposed to a strong, controlling national government.
- These differences led to greater conflict in the national government in Washington D.C. in running the nation.
The Civil War 1861-1865
- By 1861, the differences between North and South would split the nation in two.
- Eleven (11) southern states seceded from the United States of America - creating the Confederate States of America.
