- 1782: The Gnadenhutten Massacre took place as some 90 Indians were slain by militiamen in Ohio in retaliation for raids carried out by other Indians.
- 1841: Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was born in Boston.
- 1855: A train passed over the first railway suspension bridge at Niagara Falls, N.Y.
- 1874: The 13th president of the United States, Millard Fillmore, died in Buffalo, N.Y.
- 1887: Everett Horton patented a fishing rod with telescoping steel tubes.
- 1894: A dog license law was enacted in New York, the first such animal control law in the U.S.
- 1896: Volunteers of America was founded in New York City.
- 1917: Russia's "February Revolution" began with rioting and strikes in St. Petersburg.
